En 1996 Peter Buck formó un grupo al margen de R.E.M. llamado Tuatara. La banda, completada por el bajista de Luna, Justin Harwood, el batería de Screaming Trees, Barrett Martin, y el teclista y saxo Skerik entre otros, desarrollaba un experimental sonido que amalgamaba tendencias rock, pop y jazz.
