it's always like this
de Princeton Footnotes
The cars and the trains that take me
Into the city of miami beach
Are such a drag, they always make me late
And no one at the office
Can bear to look me in the face
I wonder how I ever came here
Oh and how I lost my faith
This morning
Out in the pool I waited
For a phone call from my agent
Hoping for a break
And the chance to get me far away
From everything that I've known
And all these places that I hate
I hate the air and the leaves
That fall like roses in the rain oh no
And it rips my heart in two
The sound of tanagers on the roof
And it rips my heart in two
Driving faster now I'm speeding
By the cops and bikes on the bridge
That takes me back to brooklyn
For a nice day in the park
I'm thinking all about my day and the meeting
Less less of things that fell to the side of the road
As I had settled into bed
This evening
And it rips my heart in two
The sound of tanagers on the roof
And it rips my heart in two
Morning to you
You washed your hands upon the leaves
Of the trees but I'm tired of the way
You make me watch you change the sheets and bedding
This hotel where we live is found in
Florida the keys and it's a dump but I'm tired
Of chasing down a broken dream
This morning
And it rips my heart in two
The sound of tanagers on the roof
And it rips my heart in two
