Death Cab For Cutie es un grupo de indie-rock original de Bellingham, Washington. Se formó en 1997 y toma su nombre de una canción escrita por Vivian Stanshall, que forma parte del disco Gorilla (1967) de The Bonzo Dog Band y de la película experimental de The Beatles: Magical Mistery Tour. Death Cab For Cutie comenzó como un proyecto en solitario de Ben Gibbard mientras era el guitarrista de Pinwheel. Como «Death Cab for Cutie», Gibbard editó un primer cassette llamado You Can Play These Songs With Chords. Sorprendentemente fue un éxito, por lo que B. Gibbard decidió completar su proyecto y convertirlo en un grupo completo. Entraron a formar parte de Death Cab for Cutie Chris Walla (que había participado en You Can Play These Songs With Chords) como guitarra eléctrica, Nick Harmer como bajo y Nathan Good como batería. Los cuatro sacaron el álbum Something About Airplanes el 18 de Agosto de 1998. Fue acogido favorablemente dentro de la escena musical independiente y en el año 2000 sacaron We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes. Nathan Good abandonó el grupo durante la producción de este álbum. Su participación en The Employment Pages y en Company Calls Epilogue se mantuvieron, pero fue B. Gibbard quien tocó la batería en el resto de canciones. Michael Schorr apareció por primera vez en The Forbidden Love E.P., puesto a la venta el 24 de Octubre del 2000. En el 2001, sacaron un nuevo LP titulado The Photo Album. Una edición limitada de este álbum contenía tres ‘bonus tracks’ que, posteriormente, aparecerían por separado en The Stability EP. En el año 2003 hubo un nuevo cambio de batería, Jason McGerr, de Eureka Farm, reemplazó a M. Schorr. J. McGerr sería el batería del siguiente álbum de la banda: Transatlanticism. Transatlanticism vio la luz en Octubre del año 2003. Fue aclamado por la crítica y se convertió en el álbum con mayor volumen de ventas del grupo con 225.000 copias vendidas durante el primer año. En Marzo del 2004, grabaron un EP en directo llamado The John Byrd E.P. (en honor al técnico de sonido del grupo). En Noviembre del mismo año, Death Cab for Cutie firmó un contrato con Atlantic Records, abandonando su anterior productora, Barsuk Records. B. Gibbard declaró a través de la pagina web oficial del grupo (www.deathcabforcutie.com) que nada iba a cambiar, exceptuando que «Next to the picture of Barsuk holding a 7, there will be the letter ‘A’ on both the spine and back of our upcoming albums.» [junto a la ilustración de Barsuk sujetando un 7, aparecerá una letra ‘A’ tanto en la portada como en la trasera de nuestros futuros discos]. Esto supuso un cambio significativo en el punto de vista de B. Gibbard que, con respecto a las relaciones con la productora, dijo que «are set up to fuck you and take all your money.» [están hechas para joderte y llevarse todo tu dinero]. Después de firmar con Atlantic Records, el grupo aún animaba a sus fans a descargar sus canciones a través de internet. El primer y el segundo single del grupo que vieron la luz con Atlantic Records fueron Soul Meets Body y Crooked Teeth, ambos pertenecientes a su álbum Plans, que salió a la venta en Agosto del 2005. Este disco tuvo una buena acogida tanto entre los críticos como entre los fans, recibió una nominación para los Grammys como Mejor Disco Alternativo del 2005 e incluso llegó a Disco de Oro en el 2006, tras 47 semanas consecutivas en las listas de ventas. El grupo sacó un DVD de gira llamado Drive Well, Sleep Carefully en el 2005. Conocido por su actitud a favor de los derechos de los animales, el grupo apoya a PETA («People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals», su traducción oficial en español es «Personas por la Ética en el Trato de los Animales») regalando copias del DVD para promover los derechos de los animales. A principios de 2006, el grupo anunció la salida de Directions, un conjunto de once cortometrajes inspirados por las canciones del álbum Plans, dirigidos cada uno por personas diferentes. Los videos vieron la luz uno a uno en la pagina web del grupo y el DVD salió a la venta el 11 de Abril del año 2006. El 19 de Diciembre del 2007, el grupo anunció en su pagina web que estaban trabajando en su siguiente álbum de estudio, que estará disponible en tiendas para Mayo del 2008. Según un artículo aparecido en la revista Spin Magazine el nombre del disco será Narrow Stairs.
