King Lear
de Cal Smith
There’s an old man in town named o’leary but we call him lear
He lives in a world grownup people can’t get to from here
But he’s magic to children and they love this gentle old ma
He can’t relate to grownups but we know that god understands
You can find him on a bench on the courthouse lawn everyday
Where the kids and their pets all gather and joyfully play
People pass and they notice how happy each little face gets
When they all gather round him for candy and treats for their pets
He’s a king reining there on the courthouse square
Grown people can’t get there from here
He sets in the sun and his subjects all come
To pay homage to good old king lear
The town folks all know that the old man is slow in his mind
But god sent us a gift more precious than we’ll ever find
The sun beams upon him each morning like a halo of love
And wherever he goes he’s encircled by white turtle doves
